HARRISBURG – Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) today sent a letter to Gov. Tom Wolf requesting that he restore a cut in state funding to the Hazleton Area School District.

The text of the letter is as follows:

Dear Gov. Wolf:

I am writing you again to encourage you to restore the funding cut of $613,000 to the Hazleton Area School District’s current 2016-17 Budget.

Due to the Department of Education’s recalculation of the poverty level for the district, we have suffered an unforeseen mid-year cut. However, I think the June recalculation is not accurate because a large portion of the district’s school-age impoverished children return to foreign countries in May and June and do not return for school until September. The depletion in money caused some funding issues in the district and I would like to respectfully request that this money be restored.

The Hazleton Area School District works tirelessly to combat many challenges and a massive cut to the current budget has a drastic negative impact on the district, its students and the services provided.
