State Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) is joining with U.S. Congressman Lou Barletta (R-11) and state Sen. John T. Yudichak (D-Luzerne/Carbon) to co-host a forum on the heroin and opioid epidemic locally and statewide. The panel discussion will take place on Thursday, May 11, from 5-7 p.m. at Hazleton Area High School, 1601 W. 23rd St., Hazle Township.
“Our panelists are health care professionals and law enforcement officials who will speak about the extent of the drug crisis that is plaguing our communities and the efforts underway to resolve it,” said Toohil. “Members of the public are encouraged to attend this important event and learn how they can be part of the solution.”
The panelists include:
- Knowles, MA, CADC – Clearbrook Treatment Centers senior marketing representative
- Mary Pascucci, DO, FCAP – Performant Financial Corporation medical director
- Stefanie Salavantis – Luzerne County district attorney
- Jerry Speziale – Hazleton Chief of Police
“The opioid epidemic is one of the most tragic problems we face as a community, as substance abuse is an affliction that affects millions of Americans,” Barletta said. “I consistently hear about opioid and heroin abuse when I am home in my district. I look forward to this, another public forum in our ongoing discussion, and I thank Representative Toohil, Senator Yudichak and the Hazleton Area School District for making it possible.”
Audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions of the panelists.
“The opioid crisis in Luzerne County has surpassed epidemic proportions with 140 overdose deaths last year,” said Yudichak. “The time has come to put aside any of our pre-disposed trepidations about drug addiction, and come together as a community to end the opioid crisis in Pennsylvania.”
Eyewitness News Reporter Andy Mehalshick will serve as forum moderator.
