HARRISBURG – Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) today announced that school safety grants totaling more than $100,000 were awarded to three school districts in the 116th Legislative District.

The funding was made available through a Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) program to prevent and reduce violent incidents in schools, to purchase safety and security-related equipment, and to provide for the training and compensation of school resource officers (SRO) and school police officers (SPO).

The local grants are as follows:
  • Greater Nanticoke Area School District – $39,988 (SPO)
  • Hazleton Area School District – $24,600 (equipment)
  • Northwest Area School District – $35,545 (SPO)
“No parent should have to worry about their children’s safety when they send them off to school,” said Toohil. “This funding will enable these local school districts to enhance their security efforts in order to provide a safe learning environment for students, faculty and staff.”

PDE awarded school safety grants totaling approximately $8.4 million to school entities statewide.
