By State Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne)

Luzerne County residents are reminded that the new $5 county vehicle registration fee went into effect on Jan. 18, 2019, and is now being collected with their registration renewal applications.

In recent days, a number of constituents have brought their registration renewal applications to my district office in Hazleton but have neglected to include the fee. Notice of the fee is not written on the renewal paperwork, so applicants need to remember to add $5 to the check that accompanies their form. Also, the fee will not apply to those individuals who pay the $10 processing fee instead of the full registration renewal fee.

Luzerne County is the 23rd county in Pennsylvania to enact the fee, which will help pay for local road and bridge repairs. According to county officials, the fee will generate about $1.4 million annually.

An estimated 281,000 registered vehicles in Luzerne County are eligible for the fee. State law exempts certain vehicles from the fee, including those owned by governments, some charities and nonprofits, disabled veterans and volunteer emergency response organizations.

Anyone with questions about the fee or their vehicle registration renewal application should contact my district office at (570) 453-1344.
