April 2019 is “Donate Life Month” in Pennsylvania, a time to raise public awareness of the great need for organ and tissue donations in the Commonwealth and across the country.
There are about 8,000 people in our state who are on the organ donation waiting list and, on average, every 18 hours one of them will die waiting for the call that never comes.
Every 10 minutes, a person is added to the national transplant waiting list. There are more than 138 million people who registered as organ, eye and tissue donors. However, the need for donated organs still outweighs the supply.
The encouraging news is that more people are making the decision to “donate life.” About 4.7 million Pennsylvanians have said yes to organ and tissue donation by adding the donor designation on their driver’s license.
In addition, Pennsylvania driver’s license and ID card holders can support organ donation programs with a $1 donation at the time of application or renewal. To date, nearly $14 million has been generously donated to the fund.
As an organ donor, I want to acknowledge the generosity of donors and their families and the continuing need for organ and tissue donation by joining the rest of the nation in observing April as Donate Life Month. More information is available at www.donatelifepa.org
