In my continuing effort to improve the quality of life for older residents in the Hazleton area, we are once again hosting a Senior Citizens Expo.
This free event will take place on Thursday, Sept. 12, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Boscov’s wing of Laurel Mall, 106 Laurel Mall Road in Hazle Township.
The event will feature exhibitors from nonprofit agencies; local, state and federal governments; and area businesses that will provide information on benefits and services available to older residents on a wide range of topics, including health care, insurance, nutrition and exercise, fire safety, financial planning, fraud protection, government and personal safety.
In addition, a number of health screenings will be offered, courtesy of area health care providers, including glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure and colon cancer. Please note that the blood work and glucose tests will be performed from 8-10 a.m. Participants are reminded to refrain from eating after midnight.
Rite Aid will be providing free flu and pneumonia shots to seniors with insurance cards. Those without insurance can pay for the immunization with cash or a check.
The “Drop the Drugs” van is participating again and will be located inside the mall for easier access. Seniors are encouraged to bring their unwanted prescription drugs for safe and secure disposal.
A basket raffle will take place at 12:30 p.m. Seniors are reminded to bring a return address label for easier registration. Ticket holders must be present to win a prize.
There are many programs and services available to help seniors and their caregivers, but it can be difficult and time consuming to track down the necessary information. Our expo makes it easier and more convenient by bringing everyone together in one place. I encourage seniors to come out and take advantage of this opportunity.
For more information about the expo, please contact my district office at (570) 453-1344.
