By State Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne)

Application forms for the state Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program are now available at my district office for eligible seniors and people with disabilities to begin claiming rebates for property taxes or rent payments they made last year.

Eligible participants can receive a rebate of up to $650 based on their rent or property taxes paid during tax year 2019. The program benefits eligible state residents who are 65 years or older, widows and widowers 50 years or older, and those 18 years or older with disabilities.

To be eligible, homeowners must earn less than $35,000 a year and renters less than $15,000 with half of social security income excluded.

Applicants are reminded that they need not pay a private entity for assistance in filing the forms. Copies of the forms, as well as help with filing them, are available at my district office at no cost. Applicants can stop in between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on any weekday. The office is located at 1 W. Broad St., Suite 100, in downtown Hazleton.

Applicants should be prepared to provide all the necessary income, property tax or rental information required to process claims quickly and accurately. Applications are due by June 30.

A link to additional information about the program, as well as access to downloadable forms, is also available on my website at www.RepToohil.com.

Since the program’s inception in 1971, older and disabled adults have received more than $6.9 billion in property tax and rent relief. The program is funded by the Pennsylvania Lottery and revenue from slots gaming.
