HAZLETON – Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) today again requested the Pennsylvania Department of Health provide an extra allotment of COVID-19 vaccines for teachers in the Hazleton Area School District.

In a letter sent to Acting Secretary of Health Alison Beam, Toohil explained that no in-person schooling will be available until April and vaccinating teachers now would allow students to return to the classroom sooner.

“This lack of an in-person option will continue to be a detriment to our children’s learning, mental health and nutrition,” wrote Toohil. “I have already communicated with the different parties involved, and there are currently over 600 teachers volunteering to get the vaccine as soon as it can be made available to them. If the district can access even 300 vaccines, then we would be able to initiate a rollout of phases, with the kindergarten to third-grade classes going back in some school buildings.”
Toohil made a similar request to the department on Jan. 19.
