By State Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne)

After a one-year hiatus because of the pandemic, our Senior Expo returned to the Laurel Mall in Hazle Township on Thursday, Sept. 16. My staff and I would like to thank the many older residents, their family members and caregivers who attended. We enjoyed seeing all the familiar faces again.

I would also like to thank our group of more than 60 exhibitors that took part, representing nonprofit agencies; local, state and federal government agencies; and area businesses. They provided information on benefits and services available to seniors in our region on a wide range of topics, including health care, insurance, nutrition and exercise, fire safety, financial planning, fraud protection, government and personal safety.

In addition, a number of health screenings were offered, courtesy of area health care providers, including glucose and blood pressure. Flu shots and COVID vaccines were also available, and many attendees took the opportunity to get one.

To help combat prescription drug abuse, seniors were able to dispose of their unwanted or expired medications at the Hazleton Police Department’s Drop the Drugs Van, which was parked in front of the mall entrance.

The information that was available during this free event can sometimes be difficult to obtain. Our expos make it easier and more convenient by bringing everyone together at the same time, under one roof. We were pleased that so many took advantage of the opportunity to improve the quality of their lives.
