Toohil Announces Committee Assignments

Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) has been appointed to the Judiciary, Health, Local Government and Urban Affairs committees for the 2011-12 legislative session.

Toohil said she is pleased to serve on the Judiciary Committee, which deals with issues related to crime, law enforcement, the judiciary, illegal drugs, family law and state ethics law.

“As a member of this committee, I will be involved with a host of issues related to Pennsylvania’s judicial system,” said Toohil.  “I am particularly looking forward to working on issues related to juvenile justice and strengthening laws against sexual offenders.”

Toohil said the Local Government Committee reviews bills dealing with the municipal codes by which local governments operate.

“Listening will be a big part of my role on this committee,” said Toohil.  “Local officials know what they need from state government to do their jobs.  I will spend a lot of time listening to local officials to determine how state government can best help them.”

Toohil added that many of her duties on the Urban Affairs Committee will overlap with her work on the Local Government Committee, since cities are essentially large units of local government and experience similar problems.  Issues specific to the Urban Affairs Committee include housing affordability, manufactured housing, building codes, urban redevelopment and enterprise zones, and sprawl.

Toohil also is pleased to be serving on the Health Committee, which will consider legislation related to health care programs and eliminating waste in Pennsylvanian’s welfare system.

“There are far too many examples of waste, fraud, and abuse in Pennsylvania’s welfare system,” Toohil added.  “As a member of the Health Committee, I will work to stop the abuse while ensuring that those who truly require assistance get the help they need.”

Toohil also encouraged residents to visit her website at and follow her on Facebook at
