HAZLETON – Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) encourages residents of the 116th Legislative District to visit a photo exhibit, presented by the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition that tells some of the individual stories of women living with breast cancer. The traveling exhibit, 67 Women, 67 Counties: Facing Breast Cancer in Pennsylvania, is on display at the Hazleton Health and Wellness Center, 50 Moisey Drive, Hazleton, through Sunday, June 24.
“This educational work of art celebrates the life, courage, hope and dignity of women and families who have battled breast cancer,” said Toohil. “This touching tribute showcases at least one woman from each of the state’s 67 counties and serves as a unique reminder of the emotional and physical toll breast cancer takes on each woman and her family.”
Toohil was honored to be one of several dignitaries who were invited to speak at the exhibit’s opening reception on June 14. Since 1994, the exhibit has been hosted by more than 100 communities and reached millions of Pennsylvanians through the extensive media coverage it attracts.
The exhibit encourages women to learn about and practice early detection through yearly mammograms, monthly breast self-exams and annual clinical exams. More than 103,000 women and families are living with breast cancer in the Commonwealth.
“When I see these photographs, I don’t just see the faces of breast cancer patients and survivors. I see their struggle, and I see in their eyes the determination not to let this cancer take away their spirit,” said Toohil. “The 67 women in these photographs inspire us. They are telling us their story, and from that, I am hopeful we come away with a better understanding of this terrible disease and what all of us can do to fight it and end it for good.”
