HARRISBURG – A resolution, for which state Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) was a leading co-sponsor, and which designates November 2012 as Sarcoidosis Awareness Month in Pennsylvania, Wednesday was unanimously passed in the House of Representatives. House Resolution 889 was sponsored by Rep. Louise Bishop (D-Philadelphia), who lost a family member to the disease.
Sarcoidosis is characterized by the development and growth of clumps of inflamed tissue, known as granulomas, in different areas of the body. The granulomas most commonly form on the lungs, lymph nodes, eyes and skin; and can cause organ failure. Sarcoidosis occurs at a higher rate among African Americans, especially African-American women and young males, than among other segments of the U.S. population.
“I whole heartedly support Representative Bishop’s resolution to designate November as Sarcoidosis Awareness Month in the Commonwealth,” said Toohil. “The Masterbone family, who lives in my district, had a son who died from lung complications related to sarcoidosis. Through them, I have become familiar with its causes, symptoms and treatment. Our hope is that this House resolution results in more Pennsylvania residents becoming knowledgeable about this debilitating disease and its impact.”
Louis and Patricia Masterbone of Drums, their daughter Rebecca, and her boyfriend Adam Blank were present on the House floor as guests of Toohil when the resolution was read and approved. Their son, Louis “Chip” Masterbone III, died in May 2010 at the age of 31.
