Toohil Supports Legislation to Reduce the Size of Pennsylvania’s General Assembly
HARRISBURG – State Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) today joined a majority of her House colleagues in supporting legislation that would downsize Pennsylvania’s General Assembly through a constitutional amendment.

Under House Bill 1234, the number of state representatives would be trimmed from 203 to 153. House Bill 1716 would reduce the number of state senators from 50 to 38. Both bills will next be considered by the Senate.

“Pennsylvania’s Legislature has become too large. We currently rank number two in both size and spending,” said Toohil. “The passage of these bills is significant because legislators are very hesitant to vote themselves out of office. This is just one step in a long process, but it is a path we need to take to create a state government that is more efficient and effective.”

If the bills passed by the House today also pass in the Senate, identical versions will have to be brought up again for a vote during the 2015-16 legislative session. If approved a second time, the proposals to amend the state Constitution would have to be approved by the people of Pennsylvania in a referendum vote. The new General Assembly boundaries with fewer seats would then apply to the first election after the 2020 census and subsequent reapportionment process.
