Toohil Commends Education Funding Increase in 2014-15 State Budget Proposal
HARRISBURG – State Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) issued the following statement regarding Gov. Tom Corbett’s 2014-15 budget proposal. Corbett unveiled his $29.4 billion spending plan today before a joint session of the General Assembly.

“Today marks only the start of the budget process. The governor’s address is a blueprint to be considered during the difficult budget negotiations that will occur over the next several months. Our goal is to put together a spending plan that best serves the people of Pennsylvania while still continuing to spend within our means.

“I was pleased to see the governor’s proposal spends $10.3 billion on pre-K-12 education, which is the most state funding ever in that area. This is the fourth year in a row basic education spending has increased. The plan unveiled today includes $341 million for a block grant program that focuses on student achievement and academic success. More funding is also going toward early childhood development programs and special education, which are much needed in our schools.

“Any statement that education spending has decreased is completely untruthful and is based upon a fudging of the numbers resulting from the loss of President Obama's one-time stimulus funding four years ago.

“Over the next few weeks of budget hearings, I will be digging in deep to see where we can come up with more money for our local residents. I will also be analyzing the specific allocations to my school districts: Berwick, Crestwood, Hazleton Area and Northwest Area. I look forward to the hard work that lies ahead before a final budget is enacted by the June 30 deadline.”
