Toohil Applauds Senate Committee Passage of Property Tax Independence Act
HARRISBURG – State Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) issued the following statement in reaction to today’s passage of Senate Bill 76, otherwise known as the Property Tax Independence Act, by the Senate Finance Committee in a 6-5 vote. The legislation now moves to the Senate floor for consideration.

“There is still hope for the Commonwealth’s over-burdened taxpayers with the advancement of Senate Bill 76. All of the grassroots organizations that worked so hard in support of the legislation are to be congratulated, but there is still much more to be done before we reach the finish line. Today’s historic vote has only strengthened my resolve to continue to fight for the elimination of an antiquated property tax system that is hurting so many Pennsylvania families and senior citizens.”

Senate Bill 76 would eliminate all school property taxes across the state. To replace the revenue the property tax system currently provides to public schools, the legislation would broaden the base of the state sales tax to include more services and products as well as increase the state sales tax from 6 percent to 7 percent. The remainder of the funding necessary for public schools would be generated by an increase in the state’s Personal Income Tax from 3.07 percent to 4.34 percent.
