Bill to Require Coverage for Children with Rare Digestive Disorders Becomes Law, Says Toohil
HARRISBURG – Legislation co-sponsored by Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) to help children who are unable to digest regular foods because of rare health conditions was signed into law by the governor on Wednesday.

House Bill 1436, now Act 158 of 2014, requires health insurance companies to cover the cost of amino-acid elemental formulas that are used to treat a variety of gastrointestinal disorders and protein allergies that prevent some children from being able to consume most foods. These formulas are medically necessary and expensive, sometimes costing as much as $100 per day.

“There are about 400 families across Pennsylvania with children who suffer from these rare conditions that will no longer be burdened with the high cost of formula,” said Toohil. “Earlier this year, the House Children and Youth Committee, of which I am a member, heard emotional testimony from some of the parents about the need to change the law. I am pleased we were able to ease their concerns with this legislation.”

The new law takes effect in 180 days.
