Toohil Congratulates St. Jude School in Mountain Top for Receiving National Honor
11/19/2014
Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) and other state legislators today took part in an assembly with students and faculty at St. Jude School in Mountain Top to celebrate its being named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. Joining Toohil in the photo are (from left) Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski (D-Luzerne); Sen. Lisa Baker (R-Luzerne/Monroe/Pike/ Susquehanna/Wayne/Wyoming); Jeanne Rossi, principal; Rep. MOUNTAIN TOP
– Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) today congratulated St. Jude School in Mountain Top for being selected as a National Blue Ribbon School during a celebration at the school with students and faculty members.

“A Blue Ribbon School is honored for demonstrating excellence in leadership, teaching, curriculum, student achievement, parent involvement and community support. Excellence is the key requirement of the award. Schools must excel. Being adequate or just plain good will not do.” said Toohil during her remarks. “Being recognized is a wonderful achievement, but what is equally encouraging is knowing that our children are receiving the best possible education right here in this community.”

A total of 337 public and private schools were identified by the U.S. Department of Education as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2014. St. Jude School was one of only 50 private schools in the country and one of only three schools in Pennsylvania to receive the honor this year.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

“These great schools are fulfilling the promise of American education – which all students, no matter their name or ZIP code, can flourish when schools provide safe, creative and challenging learning environments,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. “National Blue Ribbon Schools are models of consistent excellence and a resource for other schools and districts. We celebrate them for their tireless efforts and boundless creativity in reaching and teaching every student.”

St. Jude is a pre-K through eighth grade elementary school that is part of the Diocese of Scranton Catholic School System.
