Toohil Supports Budget which Spends More on Education
6/27/2015
HARRISBURG – Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) today joined a majority of her colleagues in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in supporting House Bill 1192, legislation that establishes state funding priorities for fiscal year 2015-16. The vote was 112 to 77 in favor of the measure.

The $30.18 billion spending plan represents a $1 billion, or 3.6 percent, increase over the current fiscal year. It also holds the line on taxes while continuing to adequately fund the core functions of state government.

House Bill 1192 now moves to the Senate for consideration, with the expectation it will arrive on Gov. Tom Wolf’s desk before the June 30 budget deadline.

Toohil issued the following statement regarding her vote:

“We are asking the governor to please sign this on-time, no-tax-increase budget. Our spending plan will keep state government in operation and will not turn Harrisburg into Washington, DC. Other issues and disagreements on policy can be resolved, but we have a constitutional duty to pass a budget by June 30 and we are hopeful the governor will comply with that as well. He can veto certain line items he does not agree with, but at the same time, we can move forward with a government that works for the people.

“This budget provides more funding for education than ever before in state history, including a $100 million increase for our public schools, an additional $20 million for special education, $25 million more for Pre-K Counts and a $5 million increase for Head Start, two programs that are critical in the development of young minds.

“We simply cannot spend money we do not have. This budget is a good, responsible plan that does not add to the tax burden of Pennsylvanian’s hard-working families.”
