Toohil Announces Scholarship to Valley Forge Military College
8/26/2015
HAZLETON – State Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) is currently seeking a worthy high school student from the 116th Legislative District to participate in the Valley Forge Military College Legislative Appointment Initiative. The deadline for students to submit their scholarship applications is February 15, 2016.

The Pennsylvania General Assembly created the initiative, which allows each of the state’s 253 legislators to appoint one student annually from his or her district to attend Valley Forge Military College, located in suburban Philadelphia.

“Even though it receives no state dollars, Valley Forge is the Commonwealth’s official military college,” said Toohil. “Many families are unaware that the school is open to students interested in pursuing all sorts of careers, not just those in the military. As a result, I want to make students in our area aware of this opportunity to attend one of the premier military colleges in the country.”

Each legislative appointee will receive a minimum $12,000 annual scholarship to attend the military college. The scholarships are funded by the school, which will also assist in facilitating other financial options.

Any high school senior interested in the scholarship must have a minimum SAT score of 1,000 or an ACT score of 20, and an overall high school grade-point average of 2.5. Candidates should also exhibit involvement in sports or other extracurricular activities, demonstrate leadership potential and be service-oriented.

The co-educational, two-year college offers an Army ROTC Early Commissioning Program, as well as a transfer program to top-tier, four-year colleges and universities throughout the country.

Toohil will not be directly involved in the selection process, but has assembled a scholarship committee to consider eligible applicants.

Additional information about the initiative and applications are available by contacting Toohil’s office at (570) 453-1344.
