DEP to Spray for Black Flies in Luzerne County, Says Toohil
HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will conduct an aerial black fly suppression operation this week in Luzerne and other northern and central counties, Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) announced today.

The operation has been scheduled for Wednesday, May 18, and Thursday, May 19, on the North Branch of the Susquehanna River, the Chemung River, Fishing Creek, Penns Creek, Middle Creek and the main stem of the Susquehanna River.

A helicopter will begin applying a biological larvicide on the Chemung River at 8 a.m. on Wednesday in Bradford County and move south from there. The operation will conclude sometime Thursday in York County.

DEP will be using a gray Bell 205 helicopter with red stripes that has the tail number of N648HA. It will be dispersing Vectobac SC, which is a bacterial larvicide, not a chemical, and the only product used in Pennsylvania’s waterways for black fly suppression. The helicopter will fly low, near tree top level, and release the larvicide at various predetermined positions on each stream.

Vectobac SC is a thick brown liquid resembling chocolate milk. According to the manufacturer, it can be harmful if absorbed through the skin and can cause moderate eye irritation.
