Free Flu Shots Available at Toohil’s Senior Expo on Sept. 8
8/24/2016
HAZLETON – As part of her continuing effort to inform older residents about the programs and services available to them in the Hazleton area, Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) will once again host a Senior Citizens Expo in the Boscov’s wing of the Laurel Mall, 106 Laurel Mall Road in Hazleton. The free event will take place on Thursday, Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

“I encourage all seniors and their caregivers to join us,” said Toohil. “This event brings a variety of service providers together in one place at the same time, making it more convenient to learn about the benefits available to our older residents. My staff and I will also be available to discuss any state-related issue or concern. ”

This year, Rite Aid will be providing free flu shots to seniors with insurance cards. Those without insurance can pay for the immunization with cash or a check. The cost of the regular dosage shot is $32, while the cost of the higher dosage vaccine is $65.

In addition, a number of health screenings will be available, courtesy of area health care providers, including glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure and colon cancer. Please note that the blood work and glucose tests will be performed from 8-10 a.m. Participants are reminded to refrain from eating after midnight.

The senior expo will feature more than 70 exhibitors from nonprofit agencies; local, state and federal governments; and area businesses that will provide information on benefits and services available to older residents on a wide range of topics, including health care, insurance, nutrition and exercise, fire safety, financial planning, fraud protection, government and personal safety.

The Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office will again be providing a Prescription Drug Take-Back Program drop-off box. Seniors can bring their unused or expired medications with them to be safely and properly disposed.

Representatives from the offices of state Sen. John Yudichak (D-14) and U.S. Congressman Lou Barletta (R-11) will also be participating.

A basket raffle will take place at 12:30 p.m. in the mall’s center court. Seniors are reminded to bring a return address label for easier registration. Ticket holders must be present to win a prize.
