Toohil, Gordner Announce State Grant for Road Improvement Project in Sugarloaf Township
HARRISBURG – Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) and Sen. John Gordner (R-27) today announced the awarding of a $250,000 state grant for a road project that should improve safety by easing traffic congestion. The two lawmakers played a key role in securing the funding.

Specifically, the grant will be used by Red Truck LLC, a subsidiary of Sherwood Chevrolet Inc., to complete Phase II of the Old Berwick Road Improvement Project in Sugarloaf Township, Luzerne County. The project includes the acquisition of a dormant commercial land parcel and completion of an access road designed to relieve the traffic bottleneck created by vehicles entering the Pilot Truck Stop. The total project cost is $760,000.

“The road improvements will facilitate economic development and resolve a long-standing community safety problem related to traffic congestion,” said Toohil. “I am grateful the funding was approved to complete this important project that elected officials, business owners and residents have been working on for some time.”

Last year, Sugarloaf Township was awarded a $750,000 state grant to complete Phase I of the project.

“I am pleased that the Commonwealth Financing Authority saw the merits of providing critical funding for the second phase of this project,” said Gordner. “The residents and businesses in the area will benefit greatly.”

The funding was approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority, which was established as an independent agency that holds fiduciary responsibility over the funding of programs and investments in Pennsylvania’s economic growth.
