Farm Show to Highlight Veterans’ Connections to Agriculture
1/6/2017
The 101st edition of the Pennsylvania Farm Show gets underway on Saturday, Jan. 7, in Harrisburg and runs through Saturday, Jan. 14. In addition to celebrating agriculture, this year’s event will highlight veterans’ connections to the Commonwealth’s No. 1 industry.

The Department of Agriculture is partnering with the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs to plan activities for veterans and their families. According to Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding, veterans possess a variety of skills that are needed in the state’s agricultural industry and the goal is to help them discover new occupational opportunities at the Farm Show.

Thursday, Jan. 12, has been designated as “Veterans, Military and their Families Day” with a number of events scheduled. They include a panel discussion on “Lifting Up Farmer Veterans,” an Army versus Navy cook-off, an award presentation recognizing farmer veterans and a swearing-in ceremony for military recruits.

In addition, the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs’ Mobile Veterans Outreach Van will make its debut as a Farm Show exhibitor. The mobile “office” will be set up and be staffed with accredited veteran service officers to provide information and assistance to veterans and family members who may be eligible for programs, benefits and services.

The Pennsylvania Farm Show is the nation’s largest indoor agricultural event, featuring 6,000 animals, 10,000 competitive exhibits and 300 commercial exhibitors.

Some of the more popular attractions include the sheep-to-shawl contest, tractor square dancing and the celebrity cow milking competition. Of course, the food court, which features delicious Pennsylvania-grown items, is always a huge hit.

Admission is free. Parking is $15 in on-and off-site Farm Show lots, and free shuttles are available from off-site lots. Please note that the parking lot surrounding the former PSECU building is no longer designated as official Farm Show parking. The Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center is easily accessible from nearby Interstate 81.

I encourage you to visit this year’s Farm Show and help celebrate Pennsylvania’s No. 1 industry. Additional information is available at farmshow.state.pa.us.
