Toohil Announces More than $2.5 Million in State Funding for Region
3/29/2017
HARRISBURG – Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) today announced the awarding of $2,536,375 in state funding for community improvements in the region. Toohil played a key role in securing the Local Share Account (LSA) grants for the projects and purchases.

Three of the projects are located in the City of Hazleton and received funding totaling more than $500,000.

“We are pleased that the LSA grants can be used to make critical investments in our Hazleton City neighborhoods,” said Toohil. “Our children deserve to grow up in a renewed and revitalized city, and these grants are a step in that direction. By using former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s method and the Broken Windows Theory, we are replacing our problem areas and sending a message of a safer and more beautiful city.”

The grants include:

• City of Hazleton – $300,000 for the Wyoming Street Enhancement Project, which includes new sidewalks, curbing and energy-efficient lighting along an eight block section of the historic street.
• City of Hazleton – $209,415 for Phase 1 of the Alter Street Streetscape Project, which includes surface repair and repaving; new sidewalks, curbing, corner ramps and storm water grates; trees; and decorative lighting.
• City of Hazleton – $35,000 for City Hall renovations.
• Black Creek Township – $60,000 for a new dump truck.
• Butler Township – $400,000 to relocate the Public Works Garage to an 88-acre parcel of land purchased as part of the Freedom Park Expansion Project.
• Butler Township – $60,000 to upgrade the State Fraternal Order of Police Lodge’s outdoor grove.
• Dorrance Township – $79,000 for park and playground upgrades.
• Hazle Township – $250,000 for the Greater Hazleton Joint Sewer Authority’s Area 10 Sewer Separation Project.
• Hazle Township – $23,825 for the purchase of a new vehicle.
• Hunlock Township – $326,165 to upgrade and renovate the Northwest Area School District track to encourage greater utilization by the community.
• Luzerne County Redevelopment Authority – $104,385 for the Luzerne County Courthouse Interior Restoration Project.
• Nescopeck Borough – $25,585 for the purchase of a security camera system.
• Shickshinny Borough – $143,000 for the renovation of buildings at 13-17 North Main Street.
• Sugarloaf Township – $520,000 for completion of the Old Berwick Road Project, including the widening of the roadway to accommodate a new turning lane on State Route 93, new traffic signal and culvert replacement.

The funding was approved and awarded by the Commonwealth Financing Authority, which was established as an independent agency that holds fiduciary responsibility over the funding of programs and investments in Pennsylvania’s economic growth.
