Toohil Votes Yes on Budget Bill and Increased Education Funding
HARRISBURG – Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) today joined a majority of her House colleagues in supporting House Bill 218 – the budget plan for fiscal year 2017-18. The spending proposal totals $31.52 billion, which is $815 million less than Gov. Tom Wolf’s budget blueprint, and includes no tax increases or new borrowing.

Toohil issued the following statement regarding the budget bill:

“We are excited to get a head start on the 2017-18 budget with an affirmative vote today. This version is a preliminary work product that moves the ball forward.

“I am pleased that House Bill 218 would increase spending for PreK-12 education by $150 million, including $100 million more for Basic Education, an additional $25 million for Special Education, a $20 million boost for PreK Counts and a $5 million hike for Head Start.

“It also removes thousands of people from the disability waiting list for home and community-based services.

“This balanced budget plan is respectful of the taxpayer and spends less than the year before. We are choosing to move forward so that we can have a safer, more protective and predictable Pennsylvania.”

House Bill 218 now goes to the Senate for consideration.
