Toohil Announces $282,000 in State Funding for Fire and EMS Companies

HAZLETON – Twenty-four fire and EMS organizations in the 116th Legislative District have been awarded more than $282,000 in funding through the 2017-18 Pennsylvania Fire Company and Ambulance Service Grant Program, Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) announced today.

“These dedicated public servants are always there to provide us with lifesaving services, no matter the hour or the weather,” said Toohil. “We need to do all we can to support our emergency responders. That’s why I am so glad this state program exists to defray some of their operating costs.”

Projects eligible for funding include construction or renovation of a fire or ambulance company facility, purchase or repair of equipment, training or reduction of existing debt.

Following is a list of fire and EMS organizations in the 116th Legislative District that received grants and the amount of their awards:

• Diamond Engine Hose Hook and Ladder Company No. 2 – $14,307.66
• Dorrance Township Volunteer Fire Department (EMS) – $7,037.40.
• Dorrance Township Volunteer Fire Department (fire) – $12,464.70.
• East End Engine and Hose Company No. 3 – $14,491.96.
• Fourteenth Ward Fire Company – $13,386.18.
• Harwood Fire Company – $12,464.70.
• Hazle Township Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company – $15,000.
• Hazleton City Fire Department – $15,000.
• Hazleton Rescue Squad – $15,000.
• Hobbie Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 (EMS) – $7,037.40.
• Hobbie Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 (fire) – $12,096.11.
• Hunlock Creek Volunteer Ambulance Association Inc. – $5,925.08.
• Hunlock Creek Volunteer Fire Company – $11,543.23.
• Huntington Valley Volunteer Fire Company (EMS) – $7,037.40.
• Huntington Valley Volunteer Fire Company (fire) – $11,727.52.
• Mocanaqua Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 – $11,911.82.
• Nescopeck Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 – $11,543.23.
• Nescopeck Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 – $11,543.23.
• Salem Township Volunteer Fire Company – $24,886.18.
• Shickshinny Volunteer Ambulance Association Inc. – $7,201.70.
• Sugarloaf Fire Company (EMS) – $7,037.40.
• Sugarloaf Fire Company (fire) – $12,280.41.
• Valley Regional Fire and Rescue Inc. (EMS) – $7,037.40.
• Valley Regional Fire and Rescue Inc. (fire) – $14,491.96.

The funding comes from an ongoing grant program created by the Legislature and administered by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and Office of the State Fire Commissioner.

All grants are generated from slot machine gaming proceeds, and not General Fund tax revenue.
