Trout Season is Just Around the Corner
3/11/2019
By State Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne)

It is almost time to head for that favorite fishing hole, as trout season will open across Pennsylvania on Saturday, April 13. Anglers can find out when area streams will be stocked with trout by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) by checking the 2019 stocking schedules. The schedules are available online at the PFBC website and on its FishBoatPA mobile app. Hard copies can be obtained at my district office in Hazleton, located at 1 W. Broad St.

The PFBC continues to stock approximately 3.2 million adult trout annually in more than 707 streams and 127 lakes open to public fishing. These figures include approximately 2.1 million rainbow trout; 640,000 brown trout; and 440,000 brook trout. The average size of the trout produced for stocking is 11 inches in length.

Included in this year’s stocking lists are the Keystone Select Stocked Trout Waters, a program where 21 streams across the state will be stocked with large trout, ranging between 14-20 inches in length. Approximately 6,500 large trout will be distributed among the streams at a rate of 175 to 225 per mile, which is comparable to the numbers of similarly sized fish in Pennsylvania’s best wild trout streams. A section of Harveys Creek in Luzerne County is one of the waterways on the list.

A regional opening day in 18 southcentral and southeastern counties is set for Saturday, March 30. The list of those counties is available on the PFBC website, but Luzerne County is not one of them.

Additionally, the commission will host Mentored Youth Trout Days on Saturday, March 23, for those same 18 counties and Saturday, April 6, statewide. Youth under the age of 16 can join a mentor (adult) angler who has a current fishing license and trout permit to fish for trout the Saturday before the regular opening days. Youth anglers must obtain a mentored youth permit or voluntary youth fishing license as well.

Good luck this season to all our anglers, young and old!
